Marble flooring is a magnificent choice, for sure, but such a classy, refined product comes at a pretty steep price. There’s a reason why so many fancy hotels have marble flooring in the reception – it’s because people associate marble with extreme luxury, and if the first thing they see upon entering a hotel is a marble floor, they’re sure to think ‘wow, this place is posh!’

One advantage of vinyl flooring – besides its durability, water resistance, and low price – is how easy it is to install. Sure, laminate flooring doesn’t exactly require you to be an expert, but vinyl tiles are simpler even than that, especially when you buy self-adhesive vinyl tiles from Floormaker.

Many DIY suppliers sell vinyl in sheets, which can be a bit of a pain – you have to cut long strips of vinyl, and it’s easy to get it wrong, in which case you just have to throw away the whole strip and start over. Laying vinyl flooring is a lot easier when it’s in the form of self-adhesive vinyl tiles, because there’s very little fiddling about required. Just peel off the paper and stick those tiles down!

The one potential pitfall arrives at the edges of the room. If you haven’t prepared beforehand, you can find that there’s a small gap between your vinyl and the wall – not big enough for another tile, but big enough to look a bit rubbish. You could just cut off a thin strip  of tile to fill the gap, but the end result will look far more professional if you plan ahead, measure the distance from wall to wall, and start laying the tiles from a more sensible point. You may find that gaps are unavoidable, but try to arrange the tiles so that the gap on either side is roughly equal to half a tile. That way, you can just cut a tile in half and use the two halves to finish off the row – much neater!

Vinyl floor tiles are a practical and attractive flooring option for any area of your home. As they are so simple to produce and lay they are available in a huge assortment of styles and finishes, meaning that you can get the look you want for your room easily and cost-effectively. This article will give you a brief grounding in everything you need to know about vinyl floor tiles, from how they are made to how they are laid.

Plain vinyl floor tiles are made from solid, compressed sheets of PVC and fillers. These are then turned into your familiar vinyl tiles. At the final stage coloured chips can be added to create a marbled effect on the tile’s surface.

Patterned vinyl floor tiles are produced just like plain vinyl floor tiles, except the pattern of your choice is printed onto the underside of a clear layer which is then laminated onto a plain PVC backing. This clear layer ensures that the pattern is protected from any damage.

Be sure to start from the centre of the room and work outwards, in a downwards triangular shape to avoid ending up with mismatched tiles in the centre of the floor. Fill out each triangular quarter of the room like this, then cutting the tiles to fit using your utility knife when you reach a wall. Once you have affixed all the tiles, finish by going over them with a vinyl tile roller or a rolling pin. It’s as easy as that!
